Setting the "Mood" with Song!

So as I'm finalizing putting together a physical playlist of all of the music I listened to while writing my newest manscript, I decided to do a post on setting the mood in song when writing.

Now not everyone listens to music while they write, but I do!  I love feeling those tunes and hearing those lovely lyrics to set the tone for the scene in which I'm writing.  One song can change the entire feel of a scene, so we must always have the right one to create the best scene we can!  I would like to share with you a few of my faves while writing romance.

Scene Topic 1:  Smexy

Now I use all kinds of goodies when writing smexy scenes.  You can use a lovely dovey one for a sensual scene or just a raunchy one for an intense I-just-want-to-bite-the-clothes-off-your-body-scene.

Sensual Smexy
"Colorblind" by Counting Crows

Blouse Ripping Smexy
"I Know What You Want" by Busta Rhymes ft. Mariah Carey

Scene Topic 2:  That First Meeting

Your characters can meet under all kinds of scenarios.  It can be love at first sight or a disaster!

Love at First Sight
Landon Pigg "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop"

Disaster Meeting!
Karmin "Crash Your Party"

Scene Topic 3:  The Epic Battle

So many different songs can go here.  You can have a true fight guns blazing as your heros fight their ultimate enemy or a final fight in a contemporary romance where the final confrontation is just as epic, but not so intense, like an argument that's been a long time coming between two lovers.

Guns Blazing Battle!
"I Will Not Bow" by Breaking Benjamin

Final Battle, but less Intense
"I Hate this Part" by Pussycat Dolls

So there you have it my friends.  Do you do this?  Or does listening to music just distract?

Cool songs! I've actually never heard a Pussycat Dolls song....I know. Where have I been? It depends for me...because I grew up sharing a room with a little brother, I can write with a lot of distraction going on in the background, haha. I write the best when it's silent, funnily enough, even though I have an obsession with music.

Awesome songs! I love it. I wish I could listen to music while I write. It does inspire me at other times and I use that inspiration to help me with my writing, but I need it quiet when I'm working.

I LOVE the coffee shop video - it was great! I like to listen to music before I write to get me in the mood of the scene I'm going to be working on. But usually, when I write, it's in silence or there's background noise *like coffee shop/family/restaurant noise* Great post, great songs!

Wicked song choices! I find it quite hard to listen to music when I write now. I used to be able to, but I think my concentration levels aren't as good as they used to be!

Cool songs! I often listen to music when writing, too, sometimes and music also helps me focus because it tunes out everything else that's going on around me.

Thanks! Pussycat Dolls are pretty cool to listen to for me. It's crazy I actually can't write if there's a lot of distraction, but I can listen to music, haha.

Thanks! I can do with or without, but when I do write to it's just completely changes the writing :D

That Landon Pigg song is so great. I heard it on a commercial and I was hooked. It was prefect for my college couple from "Crimson." They always seemed to find themselves in a coffee shop, haha

Thanks! I love listening to music when writing :D

So true! It really does tune out the other distractions. It's just you and your writing :)

Oh, nice songs! I particularly like Colorblind.
I can write with music sometimes. But there are times that it distracts me, or inspires a scene not connected to what I'm trying to write, haha. Which can also be fun, be exasperating when I'm trying to focus.

Ooh whenever I hear Colorblind I just get chills. It's so pretty and lovey dovey. I have admit it is harder to write when I play heavy metal. I get so into the song sometimes! But generally listening really does bring a great feel to what I'm doing!

Awesome song choices! I tend to use film scores for mine, especially the ones that have epic battle music :P
